The more I interact with Games for Windows Live, the more I like Steam.

So, I was thinking of getting the new DLC for Fallout 3. If I could buy this via Steam, I would, because the interaction goes like this:

“Hey Steam, I want this Game/DLC/Thingy.”
“Ok Jeremy. Give us X dollars.”
“Sure, here you go.”
“Ok. Here’s your game.”
“Neat. *plays game*
Simple. To the point. I like it.

My epic quest to get the Fallout 3 DLC goes like this:

I load Fallout 3.

I click “Live” to join Live, which I had never done before (why would I bother? Fallout is hardly a multiplayer game.)

I don’t have a Live account, so I follow the prompts to make one.

For reasons I’m not clear on, the system then asks me for the Registration Key for the game. Huh? I registered it when I bought it, why would I need to do so again?

I close out of the program and wander about looking for the manual. I fail to find it.

I reload the program. First thing I notice: “Continue” is grayed out. I check and confirm: my saved game files are gone. All of them. Every character I’ve played since I bought the game are gone. Now, in this case I don’t really care, as I didn’t intent to play them again, but holy shit would I have been unhappy if that wasn’t the case.

I am unable to recreate the apparent error RE the registration key. I log into Live. I poke around for a bit trying to find how to download the DLC. I fail.

I give up, and log out. Google to the rescue…I learn that I need to have the 1.1 patch. Ok, I should have the patch anyway: spend 10 minutes downloading and installing patch.

I reload the game. I go back to Live. I again fail to find a way to buy the content.

Back to Google. According to J-random website, I have to run some exe file in the GWL folder to get to the area that will let me buy the DLC.

I abandon this quest and determine that Microsoft doesn’t want my money.

The thing that irritates me even more is that if I ever bother to get to the ‘buy this’ function, I can’t just give them ten bucks and get my DLC. I have to buy 800 Microsoft Points, and then turn those in for the game. If I encounter any problems with trying to buy exactly 800 Points I’m going to be even more cross.

party!

Time for a party!
In honor of my being both old and weird, I wish to gather together many of my closest friends to talk about interesting things, see fun stuff and play neat games. I’d love to have you join me!
This November 14th (a Friday) is my 33 and a 3rd birthday. I plan to spend the day celebrating this made-up event, and if you’d care to join me, here’s how:

I’m going to have breakfast and take a walk in the morning, probably very early (like, 8-9). If anyone wants to join me for that, let me know.
At noon I’m going to be downtown and either go hang out at pike place market or go to the SAM museum, depending on the weather and mood of anyone who joins me. Meet at the brass pig of the market, at 12 if you want to join me (or call me to find out where we are).
The main body of the party will be at Andrew Ornatov’s place, who’s gift to me is to put up with my gaggle of friends descending on his house to play games and drink and be silly.
His address is:
10241 163rd Ave NE
Redmond, WA 98052
Yes, this is on the east side, so if you need a ride let me know and we can try to arrange carpools. The party will start around 6pm, and go until we all pass out.
If you need any information, or just want to stalk me to see where the party is at, you can call my cell (206 295 1503). I’d love to have people RSVP so that I know how much food to get for the party, but if you decide to show up at the last minute I’d love to have you. I am particularly looking forward to hanging out and talking before the main board gaming, so if your work life enables you to do so on a Friday day, let me know.
A note on gifts:
I usually don’t ask for gifts on my birthdays, but this is a special occasion, and it lets me be even more silly than usual: as such, I’m asking people to bring me 1/3 of a gift….I invite you to interpret that as you will.

Again, bullet point plan:
Early: breakfast and conversation
Noon: pike place/museum – meet at the pig at pike place or call 206 295 1503
6 pm: board game party on the eastside - 10241 163rd Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98052

She searched for File Extension .lif.

In addition to that data, it suggests related searches:

File Extension list
Change File Extension
File Extension Rar
Computer File Extensions
Bin File Extension
WPS File Extension
Dl File Extension
Hair Extensions

That last one should be really helpful...

Anyhow, anyone wanna call and help Liz beat up TurboTax and/or Microsoft?

to pick the brain of the internet, one of you wonderful friends of mine must know how to do this:

I have an excel spreadsheet with name/address/email data for my customers going back to 2003. I want to sort this to remove duplicates, then do a mass emailing with the email addresses and print postcard lables with the mailing addresses.

Anyone out there know a good way to do this? Or better, interested in renting themselves out for a few hours to help me do it?

ebay is full of hate

So, my ebay store has 2200ish items in it, most of them good till canceled items that auto-renew every 30 days. All of these auctions use the same template, with the name of the card changed, but everything else the same (a plug for my ebay store, shipping info, and so on).

Sometime in 2006 ebay made a change to its policies that sellers cannot accept US cash as payment (unless users are picking up an item in person). Ok, I think this is silly, but I understand the idea behind not wanting users to mail cash. Even so, less than 1% of my business is in cash, and with a 99.8% positive feedback with 2000+ unique, I like to think I have a track record of being good to my customers. The template for my auctions lists payment options. It recommends paypal, but says that I also take checks, money orders and “Cash, but you shouldn’t send cash in the mail”.

Well, some Ebay trust and safety goon stumbled onto one of my auctions, saw this text, and noted that it was in violation of the policy.
What did they do next? Did they contact me to let me know there was a problem? Call me? Suggest ways I could fix this?

No. They did call me, but not till after the next step, which was to delete about 150 auctions.

When they called me to let me know this was going on, I asked if there had been any complaints or problems and was told there wasn’t. They just noted that the text was in violation. I said I would fix it, and asked how long I had to do so. I was told, basically, no time; they will delete these auctions as soon as they see them. It takes time to modify 2200 auctions. Rather than give me this time or work with me to fix the problem they deleted 100-150 auctions about every 24, finally closing my store and suspending my account. I had asked the person who did call for the contact information of the person who would be making the decisions about my account, and was told he could not give it to me. I asked that that person call me, and got a “I’ll pass that along”.

Anyone who has ordered from me in the last month is getting emails telling them that my listings have been removed. Needless to say, they are wondering what’s up, and ebay is making me look like an idiot.

To say that I’m irate understates the issue. This demonstrates to me that ebay really cares not at all for sellers, and I’m glad I’m transitioning off to my own site. That said, I had expected to have more time to do so, and to get everything posted to playccg.com. As it is, I’m now in a big hurry, wanting to have it full of product and useable asap so my customers have somewhere to go.

So my time with microsoft is coming to a close, and I'd be happy to recommend people if anyone wants to replace me. It's a 40 hr/wk a- 1 year contract position.
